Geographical History of the TOPETE Surname
As I stated in the Home page, after initial research and verification from various legitimate sources[?] , I have discovered and proved that our unique surname is from a region that we now call both Portugal [?] and España.[?]
Spain as a unified nation did not exist until the 1880's. Prior to that period it was from what particular region you lived in that was important rather to what nation you belonged to. It would seem to be then that in those days what was more important was your regional identity and not your national identity. In fact the region of both Portugal and Spain are know as the Iberian Peninsula.[?]
According to the Brittanica Concise Encyclopeida "Its name derives from its ancient inhabitants whom the Greeks called Iberians, probably after the Ebro (Iberus- 'in Latin') River, the peninsula's second longest river."
